Building a Data Backup Plan in 2026: From Inventory to Tested Recovery

Most data loss traces not to missing technology but to a missing plan. Jobs run, backups complete, and recovery still fails because no one defined what to protect, how fast, and to what point. A data backup plan for 2026 closes that gap before an incident exposes it.

Inventory by Impact

Start with a data inventory ranked by business impact. A customer database and a scratch share have very different recovery requirements, and classifying systems this way shows where to spend recovery budget and where a lighter touch is fine.

Set RPO and RTO

For each tier, define how much data you can lose and how long you can be down. These two numbers drive every downstream decision, from backup frequency to whether a workload needs replication. A plan without them is guesswork.

With objectives set, the infrastructure follows. A capable data backup plan rests on a platform sized to meet those objectives, keeping backups fast enough for the RPO and recoveries fast enough for the RTO.

Design In Resilience

A 2026 plan assumes attackers target backups, so immutability, isolation, and verified restores belong in the plan from the start rather than as a bolt-on after the first scare.

Keep It Living

Systems, data, and threats change, so revisit and re-test the plan regularly. The organizations that recover cleanly are those whose plan reflects their current environment, not last year's.
